In my research on Nanluoguxiang, I explored its historical context, architectural features, resident demographics, related documentaries, and the politics behind its transformation. Despite its central location in Beijing, I found that most residents are ordinary or retired individuals, many of whom have lived there due to historical shifts, with an average age over 50.

Government policies now encourage residents to move out in exchange for compensation, aiming to protect the historical architecture. However, this also strips the area of its vibrant everyday life. Without its residents, Nanluoguxiang loses the essence of hutong culture — the lived experience. Real understanding only comes from walking into the alleys, speaking with the people, and witnessing life within.
