Marginalized individual files
In 2025, after losing my own dog, I began volunteering at a stray dog rescue centre in Beijing. During this time, I discovered incidents of dog bites and a lack of clear warnings about dogs with aggressive behaviour. Through conversations with the shelter owner, I learned that these dogs often had traumatic pasts, which led to their emotional instability.
This project aims to challenge the prejudice against aggressive dogs by creating an informative volunteer file. It includes safety guidelines, case files on high-risk dogs, their histories, and scientific training methods to help volunteers understand and support them. The goal is not only to protect animals, but also to explore how miscommunication between humans and animals can be repaired.
Visually, I created four A3 coloured pencil illustrations inspired by real dogs and scenes from the shelter. Using bright, hopeful colours like green, blue, and yellow, I wanted to reflect the positive atmosphere of the rescue centre, especially as most volunteers are women and children. I then scanned the illustrations to design a full file set—two brochures, a map, a dog portrait, and souvenirs like keychains and fridge magnets made from shrink plastic.
These materials will be produced in bulk and distributed to volunteers during the July programme, helping to build deeper understanding and empathy in stray dog rescue efforts.
